Exotic animals, shelters, and surprising results: 5 years of MLS® Laser Therapy with Michela Tognoni

A fundamental support in shelters

Dr. Michela Tognoni, Medical Director of the Monte Contessa municipal dog shelter and cat shelter in Genoa, has no doubts:

“MLS® Laser Therapy is extremely useful for a facility like ours as it allows us to treat patients quickly and effectively, is well-tolerated, and has no particular contraindications”.

“By concretely verifying their pet's positive response to the laser application and the results achieved” Tognoni specifies, “owners become the therapy's primary supporters”.

MLS® Laser Therapy became part of the Genoese Veterinary practice five years ago, significantly improving the quality and satisfaction it gains from its work.

From intuition to purchase: how it all began

Wood wedding anniversary with MLS® Laser Therapy: how did your partnership begin?

A bit by chance, actually. After graduating, I completed my internship at the "Le Cicogne" Veterinary Centre, which focused on equine rehabilitation, where laser therapy was frequently used with significant results. I then had the opportunity to continue my practice at a clinic specialising in exotic animals, where the use of MLS® Laser Therapy was extremely common. I therefore had the opportunity to concretely verify its effectiveness in treating various disorders: the quality of the results, but above all the animals' response in terms of tolerability, convinced me to purchase it almost immediately after graduation, in 2020.

What is your assessment after 5 years?

The assessment is truly positive! For the first 3 years, I used MLS® Laser Therapy to treat exotic species, and the results were truly surprising, often exceeding expectations. I think, for example, of how useful the therapy is in treating odontogenic abscesses in animals that cannot undergo surgery, helping them live with the condition and giving them a better quality of life. But it is also valuable in the case of wounds or neurological problems.

Do you have any specific examples?

More than one, actually! I am thinking, for example, of the case of a gerbil with hind limb paralysis who resumed walking without difficulty following a course of laser therapy. A similar result was also achieved in a guinea pig suffering from sudden paralysis, again of the hindquarters, which required only 10 applications to fully recover. The case history, however, is much broader and more complex…

Use in shelters: speed, tolerance, and efficacy

I believe your experience in the Genoa dog shelter/cat shelter allowed you to verify the effectiveness of the therapy in numerous cases..

Undoubtedly, MLS® Laser Therapy is a valuable aid in our daily practice, which places us in the front line in treating even stray cats. Because of the large number of strays, we need a therapy that allows a rapid application and a short recovery time: MLS® Laser Therapy goes exactly in this direction, in addition to being well-tolerated by the animal and having no significant side effects.

Are these, in your opinion, the strengths of MLS®?

Certainly, but not the only ones. In addition to being objectively effective, MLS® has many other advantages, ranging from its simple and rapid application method to its reception by the patient, who feels no pain, has no side effects, and tolerates it very well. All these factors, combined with seeing objective effects right from the first sessions, also benefit owners, whose sole goal is to ensure that their pet has the best possible recovery from its initial condition. Last but not least, MLS® Laser Therapy significantly reduces the use of medications, a crucial aspect. Precisely because of all these characteristics, I believe MLS® Laser Therapy should be available in all animal care centres.

The strengths of MLS® according to Tognoni

Are there any conditions or disorders in which MLS® maximises its effectiveness?

My practice has led me to conclude that MLS® can provide truly rapid results, especially in acute conditions that particularly affect small animals. In these circumstances, significant results can be seen from the very first session. But not only that: in addition to restoring the animal's quality of life, this therapy also allows the veterinarian to improve their approach to the patient and, at the same time, to the owner.

Let's look into the future: how do you see your business in the next 5 years?

MLS® will certainly always be part of my path, but I'd also be interested in learning more about laser puncture and magnetotherapy, about which I've read extremely interesting results.
