Ginger, conservative treatment of metacarpal microfracture

Species: Dog
Breed: Newfoundland
Gender: Female
Age: 5 YO

Clinical case: Ginger shows sudden lameness (grade 5/5) on her left front limb. Orthopaedic visit and x-ray exam reveal a microfracture on the proximal portion of the fourth left metacarpal bone.
Ginger is referred for MLS® Laser Therapy in order to stimulate healing of the microfracture and to relieve pain.
When first visited – although being on NSAIDs and pain killers – Ginger shows pain at carpal flexion and extension, and lameness (grade 2-3/5).

Therapy: MLS® Laser Therapy sessions started twice a week, using “acute pain” program, associated with the application of a specific protocol studied in order to encourage bone callus formation on the fracture site (point treatment, using increasing frequencies from 1 Hz to 73 Hz).
Right after her first treatment session, Ginger could start decreasing the doses of pharmaceutical medications, and in a few days, completely stop taking them.
Starting from the third session, pain treatment was not anymore needed, and after the fifth treatment session Ginger gaits look very improved.

X-ray exam performed 20 days after MLS® sessions started, confirms full recovery of the affected bone segment.
