Otto, Maremma Sheepdog with perianal fistulas

MLS® Laser Therapy for perianal fistulas

Species: Dog
Breed: Maremma Sheepdog
Gender: Male
Age: 8 YO

Case report: Otto, 8 yo Maremma Sheepdog, shows two open fistulous tracts in his perianal area, following an episode of prostatic hypertrophy.

Clinical assessment showed limited ROM of both stifle joints, and muscle chains of the pelvic limbs undergoing hypotrophy.
Nello’s dynamic evaluation shows shortened hind limb flight arcs, he’s not willing to trot and he overloads his front end, lowering his head and neck due to compensation.

Therapy: The two perianal fistulas received 11 MLS® treatments in 3 weeks, in association with topical applications of medical honey cream (Vetramil®).
MLS® LASERtherapy has been applied with the “point to point” modality over the two fistulas, using two pre-set treatment programs, specific for the cicatrisation of wounds and contaminated wounds.
Following the first 3 MLS® applications, fistulas looked less inflamed and less painful.
After 6 treatments, granulation tissue was present.

From the 9th treatment on, fistulas started reducing their diameter, and at the end of the treatment cycle they are almost completely healed.
