Romy, a dog with a large skin wound with dehiscence

SPECIES: dog
BREED: Miniature Schnauzer
GENDER: female
AGE: 2
NAME: Romy

Clinical case:
Romy arrived with a large wound on the right side of her body, which also partly reached the medial aspect of the rear limb, due to being run over by a car.
When visited, she was prostrated, with severe pain and diarrhoea. The day of the accident (3 days earlier), the wound had been sutured and drainage inserted. Subsequently, the cutaneous necrosis increased and the skin began to lift at certain points.

Therapy:
Romy was X-rayed in the facility where she had been operated and no broken hip or limbs were found. An MRI of the abdomen showed an inflamed liver and gastritis.
Romy was prescribed a rehydrating and anti-bacterial systemic treatment, analgesics for the pain and antacids for the gastritis.
The wound was washed and cleaned with antiseptics and the fur which covered the flaps was shaved.
She was then topically treated with antiseptics, honey and protected with paraffin gauze.

Two days later, the necrotic skin began to separate from the skin and the sutures collapsed with the drainage.
Healing by second intention was then opted for, together with MLS® Laser Therapy treatment.
The right side and the medial hind limb were treated with the "Wound (infected)" and "Wound" scanned laser programme.

Response to the combined therapy (antibiotic + MLS® Laser Therapy) was excellent, and she healed quickly. Romy recovered very well within a short time.
